Professor Sun Wei, male, tutor of Ph. D. students, born in Jiuquan city of Gansu Province in 1952, is mainly engaged in geology of oil and gas deposits (fields) and oil and gas development. He graduated from the Department of Geology at Northwest University in 1978 and stayed on to teach. After being promoted to Professor in 2000, he was honorably selected as a tutor of Ph. D. students in 2001. He acted first as deputy director, and then director of Petroleum Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Geology at Northwest University from 1986 to 2006. Now he is the accreditation member of American SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), the syndic member of Petroleum Association, the deputy director of Reservoir Engineering Division, the director of Academic Committee of Shaanxi Oil-and-Gas-Field Special Stimulation Technology Laboratory，the head of geologic reservoir and reservoir physics Institute of NWU. He has also been the expert for the discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology and expert for the evaluation of National Science and Technology Award.
He has been devoted to the teaching and scientific research at Northwest University for thirty-three years after his graduation. In his twenty-odd-year work as deputy director, and then director of Petroleum Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Geology, he has always worked devotedly and diligently. The development of Petroleum Science major of the Department of Geology and the cultivation of creative talents have witnessed his devotion. He has been awarded the outstanding teacher and scientific research worker for many years in a row and the moral model of the Northwest University. The laboratory of fluid displacement, founded by him, has provided much support for the research work in the field. His waterflood test of authentic sandstone micromodel has exerted great influence on the scientific research work of oil and gas fields and thought highly by the experts at home and abroad.
In his teaching career, he has been the tutor of more than 30 PhD students and over 80 Master students and given the guidance to 150-odd seniors. His students perform well in study as well as in practice. His Master students and PhD students have had the opportunity to undertake scientific research projects independently. Guided by him, his Master students and PhD students have successfully passed the theses and dissertations defenses, which have received the welcome responses from the evaluation experts in and out of school and of institutions. Some of his PhD graduates have been on the major teaching positions in petroleum institutes and played a professional leader role in some oil fields.
Professor Sun is mainly engaged in the research of geology of oil and gas deposits (fields) and oil and gas development. Particularly in the aspects of micro-pore structure, porous flow mechanism and effect of low permeability reservoir, he has formed relatively systematic and complete research approaches and working methods, which have provided helpful guidance for and theoretical basis of oil and gas field development decision, water injection adjustment program and prediction of oil and gas field development dynamic state. He has presided over 70 Major Project of Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development (973 Program), National Key Technology Support Program and Transverse Scientific Research Projects. He has published over 80 academic theses and co-authored three books, won one national technical patent and five provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. He was awarded a third prize of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Petroleum Industry In 1988, silver award of scientific and technological achievement of the Ministry of Petroleum Industry in 1995, a second prize of scientific and technological progress of the Shaanxi Education Committee in 1999 and first prizes of scientific and technological progress of Shaanxi Provincial Government in 1987 and 2011 respectively.
The experts and the scholars in the field have given credit for the research achievement of Professor Sun. And he has enjoyed a high academic reputation. Due to his great contribution to the field, he has honorably been the expert for the evaluation of State Science and Technology Award, expert for the evaluation of disciplines, postgraduate programs, 100 nationwide excellent doctoral dissertations and scientific research achievements of the Ministry of Education and expert for the evaluation of scientific research achievements of Shaanxi Scientific and Technical Committee. He has also been invited to make lectures in international and national low permeability oil field symposiums, Shanghai Branch of CNOOC, Jiangsu Branch of Sinopec, Changqing Branch of PetroChina, Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum(group) CO., LTD and Xi’an Petroleum University. Great contributions have been made by him for the development of low permeability oil fields in Shaanxi Province and in China.
